Yes, we are talking about the tuk tuk, the three-wheeled vehicle that has earned its place not only as a means of transportation, but also as a cultural symbol.

But... did you know that not all tuk tuks are the same? In each country they have their own name, style and character. Today we take you to discover their history, their variants, and why getting on one is part of the experience of traveling in Southeast Asia.

Where does the tuk tuk come from?

The origin of the tuk tuk dates back to the 1950s, when Thailand began importing motorcycles from Japan. What began as an economical and functional vehicle, soon adapted to the local style: colorful, decorated and with that unmistakable mix of noise, unstable balance and absolute charm.

Its name, “tuk tuk”, comes from the repetitive sound of its idling engine. A kind of mechanical onomatopoeia that is engraved in the memory of locals and travelers.

Today, the tuk tuk is almost a Thai emblem, although it is also found in many other countries, each with its own versions.

Asia's three wheels: tuk tuk, bajaj and cyclo

What in Thailand is a tuk tuk, in other corners of the continent changes its name, structure... and personality:

🔹 Tuk tuk (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos):
The most famous.
